Opossums rarely do any damage in neighborhoods. They do
however, serve a s kind of a “clean up crew”. They eat just about anything
including roadkill. Opossums are the only marsupials in North America (they have
pouches like a kangaroo) They are also unique in that they are one of the few
animals that have an opposable thumb just like humans. They use both their
thumbs and strong prehensile tails to help them climb. Their low body
temperature is thought to make it almost impossible for them to get rabies. If
you see a opossum drooling, it’s likely scared and trying to “play
‘possum”.
